Rebecca Gouldson

Rebecca works in a variety of metals to create one-off wallpieces and other forms. The quality of surface is vitally important - her aim is to juxtapose the solid and precise nature of metalwork with spontaneous, expressive surfaces, using a palette of etching techniques and chemical patinas to mark, texture and colour metal in an intuitive way.

The pieces shown here are composed of contrasting polished metal and decayed, etched marks, reflecting signs of the passage of time and evidence of human activity. A symbiotic relationship between printmaking and metalwork, where the frequently discarded etching plate becomes the cherished final outcome.

Her technique frequently begins with photographing rhythmic patters in the environment which influence monoprints, which in turn are manipulated and etched on to the metal. Painted resists are used in the process of electroplating, depositing fine silver to the copper plate, chemical patinas darken the work, which is then polished and, in certain pieces, contrasting metal leaf applied.

Rebecca graduated in 2003 and a Crafts Council 'Next Move' award provided support in setting up her practice. She now lives and works in Liverpool.
