Giles Penny

Through his early training Giles was fascinated with drawing and the ability to create an image with just a few pencil lines. This is still a magical feeling for him and he has built up over the years a bank of visual symbols, pictures and words that are constantly in use during the creative process. It wasn't until later at Newport Art College in the early eighties that he began to translate ideas from 2D into 3D and back again.

The pieces we are showing here come from experimenting with the manipulation of paper or card which are then translated onto bronze or steel sheet, and formed to create a three dimensional piece. He also works on a large scale, absorbed by the all consuming activity , enjoying the variety of materials employed in sculpting - the hard metal, soft clay and plaster drying out.

For him being an artist is a journey of constant enquiry in many forms on many levels … "a sculpture is born from the bonding of internal and external experiences and the conclusion of a piece marks the point at which it exists by itself with the artist as a link in a process of creation".

Giles's sculpture has been exhibited since 1990 throughout the UK at galleries, sculpture parks and major sculpture events, together with solo shows and commissions for both private and public spaces.
