The richness of the Dorset landscape and coastline is the inspiration for Alastair Michie's abstract paintings: the rugged Purbeck quarries, rock faces and calligraphic fissures along the coast, the heathland and rivers.
Alastair's work derives solely from imagery stored in his memory - he has never relied on sketches and his resource is more a cumulative lifetime of images, experiences, colours and shapes. His paintings are distinctive and recognisable, but not formulaic, aiming to achieve colour balance, composition and discipline.
His original training as an architect was interrupted by the War when he served with distinction as a night fighter pilot. Reluctant to return to university, he successfully took up commercial illustration but in the sixties was introduced to the work of the American abstract impressionists such as Rothko, Kline and Motherwell and he knew he had to start painting. And this he has done with passion and conviction since!
Alastair Michie is a Royal West of England Academic, a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and has an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Bournemouth University. His work has been exhibited widely for many years and his paintings have been acquired by the Museums of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo, Robert Fleming Holdings, Mitsui Banks, Bournemouth University, British Aerospace and other corporate and private collectors across the world.
