Barbara's work evolves from her experience of the landscape shapes in nature, repeated patterns, worn sea groins, trapped stones. The way the sea wears away at man-made structures such as sea defences, groins and piers has long been a source of inspiration.
Many years of drawing and photographing areas of interest, including Cornwall, Dorset and the various coastlines around Ireland, coalesce with visual memories into abstract compositions which seek to convey a sense of place.
For Barbara, working in oils allows her to develop her paintings over time, starting with particular images over which new ideas are layered. She works on her canvases over many months, building up glazes and depth of colour as well as form, so that the final piece becomes richly textural.
Born in 1959, Barbara studied art in Buckinghamshire in the late 70s. After travelling and raising a family she took a further foundation and BA in Fine Art at Brighton University, graduating in 1996. Her work has been shown during the Brighton Festival for a number of years and through Shirley Crowther contemporary art at exhibitions and art fairs in London and other UK venues.
