Louise Balaam

Louise's work is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, in particular to the quality of light. She is fascinated by the relationships between light and dark, and with how the pattern of light creates an emotional impact.

She draws in the landscape and then paint intuitively in the studio, so that the work has a sense of place, yet can also evoke memories and personal interpretations in the viewer. This approach allows her then to exploit the qualities of her material: the sensuality and depth of colour of oil paint, used in direct and gestural brushstrokes.

For the Autumn Exhibition 2009 Louise has been working on a new series of more abstract paintings, looser in their description, more energetic in their creation. She has retained her palette of sensual colours whilst producing lively, atmospheric canvases.

Louise has recently been awarded an MA in Fine Art from Christchurch University, Canterbury, and in the last two years has shown her paintings in London and throughout the UK. Exhibitions include Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal West of England Open and Autumn exhibitions, the New English Art Club, the Discerning Eye and the Hunting Art Prize, as well as gallery shows and art fairs.
