Teresa Lawton

Teresa Lawton was born in Poole, Dorset. She received a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art from Winchester in 1994. She now lives & works from her studio in the historical village of Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck. She walks the beach & hills every day and being so familiar with the coastline & landscape is a key component in the way her work develops.

“My paintings are about my time & my presence in the places I walk. People, animals, all things leave residual energies which I am sensitive to, leaving indelible unseen impressions on the land. This landscape is the ground on which I explore these thoughts and possibilities in paint.

I paint about a solitary inner world, which is affected by the memories of people & places I have known & loved. They maybe about my own sorrows & joy or of dreams, colours & shadows, solitary weathered buildings or simple marks in the sand with random objects which get washed up along the beach are highly symbolic to me. These shapes & images inspire me, I see forgotten things that have been discarded and for some reason I connect with them, I identify with them in some way, I take the memory of them away with me and paint about them, they hold some mystery for me”.

Teresa paints instinctively, building up deep rich areas of polished colour, which are scored and marked as the work develops, subtly revealing the hidden shapes within. Animal shadows or interior sculptural forms may appear giving structure to the work. These lay along side contrasting areas of space and light.

Whether re organizing shapes with pencil marks or scoring the surface, the aim is to compose an absolute balance by building up layers, divisions and dynamic overlays in order to create a calm.

Teresa has exhibited at The Royal Academy Summer Shows and at the New York Art Fair. She exhibits with The Belgrave Gallery in St Ives, Cornwall, The Art Stable in Child Okeford, Dorset and is represented at the leading London Art Fairs by Shirley Crowther Contemporary Art & Lena Boyle Fine Art.
