Yuk Kan was born in Hong Kong in 1959. She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Fine Art and Chinese Literature and five years later came to London, studying ceramics at Goldsmith College. She met her Dutch husband here and now lives in Holland. These different cultures have a huge impact on her work - for her it's like a big melting pot in which she puts Chinese wisdom and calligraphy along with Chinese and Western literature, poetry and the living experiences in Holland.
She has always drawn and for her porcelain is like a piece of 3-dimensional paper. For many porcelain is a difficult material to work with due to its easily deforming characteristic but this is what she loves, building, evolving, altering and transforming the form until out of the kiln.
She says "I sometimes look at my work as a moment in time, a memory, from what I have seen and what I have experienced, from within but also from the outside world. Different fragments and elements composed in one work: a poem, a landscape, a beautiful painting or particular emotion. Above all, it is the excitement of the exploration and to encounter the unexpected that inspire me the most."
Yuk Kan's ceramics have been exhibited worldwide: throughout Europe, Hong Kong, USA, Korea and Australia, with many nominations and awards
